VDOT's Lynchburg Location and Design Section has an exciting career opportunity for a Roadway Design Engineer.
Successful candidate will use design analysis techniques, software and tools to produce construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects across the ten counties of the Lynchburg District.
Position will also serve as project manager to include responsibility for preparing quantities and estimates, developing and maintaining schedules, monitoring project activities, and preparing and presenting engineering data.
Successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical guidance on roadway design issues from the preliminary engineering process through construction.
The blend of roadway design and project management will depend on the work program and the skill set of the successful candidate.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to roadway design and design standards, construction methods, specifications, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations and estimate quantities and cost of materials/equipment/labor.
Ability to plan and schedule work.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse groups, representing the agency to internal and external individuals in a positive manner.
Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
Skill in the use of design and analysis software and CADD tools to develop simple and complex roadway designs.
Additional Considerations Experience managing projects and/or consultant contracts for design.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
Experience using MicroStation, Geopak and Microsoft Project software.
A combination of training, experience or education in civil engineering or related field desired.
