BWXT is currently seeking a Metallurgical Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT's innovation hub.
BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.
Advanced Technologies is currently seeking a range of experienced Metallurgical Engineers to be part of a team assisting multiple nuclear development projects at its Advanced Technologies research and development organization in Lynchburg, VA.
The engineer will be responsible for identifying material solutions based on design requirements, evaluating the manufacturing and technology readiness (MRL/TRL) for those materials, and advising on sourcing, development and production pathways.

Job Description / Duties:
Support the evaluation of materials for a particular application based on the required performance characteristics, and required manufacturing and technology readiness levels.
Execute on development projects to reduce risk and improve MRL/TRL in support of space and terrestrial applications.
This includes maintaining material selection requirements, guidelines, and usage agreements.
Interface with nuclear, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multi-disciplinary development projects.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
A Bachelor's Degree in a technical field of study (e.
g.
, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear Engineer, Physics, Chemistry etc.
) is required.
A minimum of (2) years of relevant experience is required; advanced degrees can substitute for years of experience.
Must possess strong skill set in materials science; which includes the processing, structure, and performance of metallic materials.
Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task are required.
Must be a U.
S.
citizen with no dual citizenship.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.
S.
Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
Preferred Skills /
Experience:
Material system experience in one or more of the following:
Austenitic and Martensitic stainless steel.
Understanding of various welding technologies (ebeam, laser, resistance, etc.
).
Understanding of ASME codes for existing nuclear reactor materials and development of ASME code cases for next-generation nuclear reactor materials.
